Comes to choosing a suit lining fabric

A lot of attention is given to the fabric, colour, cut and buttons of a suit, but in truth, the lining is the unsung hero. The lining helps a suit stay wrinkle-free, keeps the wearer warm in cold weather and adds a sense of luxury. In addition, the lining hides all stitching and threads from the jacket’s construction and makes it easier to put on and take off.

When it comes to choosing a suit lining fabric, the choice is almost entirely down to personal preference. There are a range of choices available, from the luxurious silks that are used in high-end designer suits to synthetic fabrics like acetate or polyester. Off-the-rack suit makers tend to use the cheaper synthetic options because they are more cost effective for them, but with bespoke tailoring you have a much wider range of options at your disposal.

A good option is to choose a fabric that is made from natural fibres, such as cotton or linen, which are both very breathable and will keep you cool in the heat. If you want something more elegant, a wool lining is ideal. A wool lining will also hold its shape better than most other types of linings. Then there’s cupro, which is a great alternative to silk because it looks and feels very similar to silk and is made from recycled materials. It’s also soft, anti-static and very lightweight.

Other popular lining options include viscose and rayon, which are both very smooth, soft and breathable. They are also easy to clean and can be a great choice for summer suits. The lining should match or compliment the colour of the outer fabric. A good option is a pale or light shade of the same colour, which will look elegant and formal. Alternatively, you can opt for a more vibrant or contrasting shade to make your suit stand out from the crowd.

Silk lining is considered the gold standard for jacket linings. It’s a luxurious, natural fabric that is also very breathable and is easy to iron. It is expensive, but if you’re paying for a quality suit, it makes sense to invest in the best lining that money can buy.

While it’s difficult to see the lining from the outside of the suit, the colour or pattern you choose for the lining will have an impact on how the suit hangs on your frame and how others perceive your style. So choose carefully and have fun experimenting with bold or subtle linings to express your personality and make your suit truly your own.
